Heart Attack and Pulmonary Embolism

Heart attacks and pulmonary embolisms are two serious health concerns that are caused by blocked blood flow in the body. These life-threatening concerns sometimes result from a doctor’s negligence.

What is a Heart Attack?

Buildup of cholesterol, fat, and other substances can form plaque in the coronary arteries and block the flow of blood to the heart. This blockage can damage part of the heart muscle and cause a heart attack. While treatment techniques have improved, a heart attack can still be fatal. The following are common symptoms of a heart attack:

  • pressure or tightness in the chest or arms
  • nausea, heartburn, abdominal pain
  • shortness of breath
  • fatigue
  • sudden dizziness or lightheadedness

What is Pulmonary Embolism?

A pulmonary embolism occurs when a blood clot forms in a vein (commonly in the leg), travels through the bloodstream, and lodges itself in the lungs. Large pulmonary embolisms can be fatal, causing the heart and lungs to fail rapidly. When a pulmonary embolism is quickly and properly diagnosed and treated, a patient’s chances for survival are good. The following are common symptoms of a pulmonary embolism:

  • shortness of breath
  • anxiety or restlessness
  • chest pain that may spread to the shoulder, arm or neck
  • coughing or spitting up blood
  • rapid heartbeat

How Can a Physician Be at Fault?

Typically, medical professionals working in hospitals and emergency rooms properly diagnose and treat heart attacks and pulmonary embolisms. But sometimes a physician may misdiagnose the condition and provide inadequate or improper care. The doctor may fail to perform a proper analysis of the patient’s physical condition or fail to prescribe an anticoagulant for blood clots. Or the emergency room staff may not take immediate action when a patient arrives asserting that they are having a heart attack. In any of these situations, great physical harm or death can result.
