Thurswell Represents Woman Whose Exploding Phone Caused Car Fire and Threatened Her Life

Recommended safety measures for drivers include putting your cellphones away when behind the wheel to avoid distracted driving. There have not, however, been any warnings about what to do if your phone catches on fire while you’re driving. A Detroit woman is determined to change this with help from her lawyer Jerry Thurswell of Thurswell Law.

She Made It Out Alive – Others May Not Be So Lucky

OBurned Car from Exploding Samsung Cell Phonen May 21, 2018, a Michigan woman was driving on a side street when one of two cellphones – Samsung Galaxy S4 and the Samsung Galaxy S8 – she had resting in the cupholder beside her caught fire. “Out of the corner of my eye, I saw a spark,” the woman says, who has asked for her identity to be concealed. “I thought I was going to die when I saw the sparks and the fire.”

The woman quickly pulled over and got out of her car just before flames engulfed her Nissan Maxima, destroying the vehicle. She is aware of just how lucky she was to escape with her life. “What if I was on the highway stuck in traffic and I couldn’t get out?” Not only could her life have been taken, nearby motorists could have suffered too.

The Detroit Fire Department confirms that the cell phone was indeed the source that started the fire in the vehicle.

The Aftermath of the Exploding Cellphone

Burned Car Exploded Samsung Cell PhoneLooking for answers about why this woman’s cellphone exploded and what could have been done to prevent it are just one part of this situation that needs to be resolved. Attorney Gerald Thurswell explains that his client is still suffering after the trauma. She struggles to deal with the emotional scars and is having trouble sleeping.

It’s easy to forget about the hidden elements of an auto accident or other personal injury situation. Lawsuits are not just to ensure that the right people are held accountable for their actions. There is also the need for victims to take care of mental, physical, and emotional difficulties they experience after an incident. Without proper treatment, these scars can take a toll on relationships, career, and quality of life.

Preventing Cellphone Fires and Saving Lives

There is no way to predict what could happen when you’re behind the wheel of a vehicle. You can take every precaution and follow every traffic law and keep your eyes on the road, but sometimes circumstances are out of your control. That’s why they’re called accidents. However, one thing that no individual should ever experience – whether they’re driving a vehicle or not – is their cellphone exploding and catching on fire.

Samsung has received similar complaints about their phones, though neither of the two phones this Michigan woman owns are on a recall list. “We’ve contacted Samsung,” says Thurswell. “They’ve been very responsible and sent a crew to examine the car and portions of the phone. Once it’s determined which of the phones and that one is recalled, we’ll probably save lives.”
