Slip-and-Fall Accidents

Most people are not just ‘clumsy’ – a slip and fall that results in injury may not be your fault. A “slip & fall” is a type of accident that occurs when a person slips, trips or falls as a result of an unreasonable condition on another person’s property. Slip and fall accidents can occur anywhere and anytime, on public or private property, indoors or outdoors. A slip-and-fall injury may occur because of:

  • Poor weather conditions (for example, ice, snow, or rain);
  • Uneven or cracked sidewalks;
  • Potholes;
  • Poor lit or unmarked pathways or stairs;
  • Wet floors;
  • Unbalanced flooring;
  • Poor floor coverings in hallways or stairs;
  • Obstructions on the floor or walkway;
  • Inadequate lighting;
  • Inadequate handholds or missing hand rails;
  • Poorly maintained steps;
  • Defects in carpet, tile or concrete.

Often times, these conditions exist because landowners have not maintained their property.

As a result of the slip and fall, a person usually sustains an injury, which ranges from minor to extremely severe. A victim may sustain bruises, scrapes and broken bones that require only minimal medical treatment. Other victims may suffer from traumatic brain injuries, spinal cord injuries, burn injuries, neck injuries, back injuries and hip injuries that can cause lifelong problems and require ongoing medical care.

If you have been injured on someone else’s property you may be entitled to compensation for:

  • Medical expenses;
  • Lost earnings;
  • Any resulting disability;
  • Pain and suffering;
  • Emotional distress.
