New Report Suggests Breast-feeding Reduces Cancer Recurrence

Published on September 2nd, 2015

Breast-Feeding Reduces Malignant Cells

SOUTHFIELD (THURSWELL) – Researchers examined 1,636 breast cancer survivors. Compared to mothers who never breastfed, women who breastfed their babies had a 30 percent reduced risk of recurrence. Women who breast-feed more than six months, experienced a 37 percent reduced risk.

During pregnancy, cells within the breasts expand. Breast-feeding leads to loss of these expanded cells which can become malignant. Those malignant cells lead towards cancer development later in life.

The study also includes that breast-feeding reduces a woman’s lifetime number of menstrual cycles. Reducing those cycles also reduces exposure to harmful hormones such as estrogen.

Before making a personal decision whether or not to breast-feed, a discussion with your doctor is advised. You will want to ask questions about your own personal health issues and how breast-feeding will affect you. It is also advisable that you talk about your babies health and how it is developing during pregnancy.
