neonatal encephalopathy infant birth injury What is Neonatal Encephalopathy?

Neonatal Encephalopathy (NE), sometimes known as hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy (HIE), is a form of brain damage that results when an infant does not receive enough oxygen. The condition should be medically treated immediately before it further damages the brain.

What Causes HIE?

HIE can be caused by a number of things that may take place before, during, or after birth, including:

  • fetal Distress
  • improper circulation of blood to the placenta
  • maternal diabetes with vascular disease
  • cardiac disease
  • fetal anemia
  • malformation of the lungs
  • umbilical cord around the neck or body
  • prolonged labor
  • low or high maternal blood pressure

What Are the Symptoms and Effects of HIE?

Noticeable symptoms associated with neonatal encephalopathy include:

  • seizures
  • low heart rate
  • poor muscle tone
  • weak or lack of breathing
  • pale or blue skin
  • excess of acid in the blood

The number of symptoms that present themselves depends on the severity of the condition. A baby diagnosed with HIE may experience mild, moderate, or severe symptoms. More mild cases will have little (or no) effect on the child’s life, while more serious cases can result in cerebral palsy, seizures, developmental delays, and other cognitive issues.

Can Neonatal Encephalopathy be treated?

Fortunately, neonatal encephalopathy and HIE are treatable when addressed early. The best treatment option for a child is be determined by the cause and the severity of the condition.

  • mechanical ventilation
  • cooling of the baby’s brain or body
  • hyperbaric oxygen treatment
  • medication
  • treatments to help the heart and blood pressure
