Brain Injury

Brain Injury Overview
In the pregnancy and birth process, a number of things can go wrong. Among the worst injuries an infant can suffer is a brain injury. These injuries may lead to cognitive and developmental delays later on down the road. Brain injuries during the birthing process can occur in a variety of ways but are most often the result of either head trauma or a deprivation of oxygen to the brain. Either way, the results can be devastating.

Head Trauma
Incidences of head trauma during delivery are all-too-common. Excessive force or improper extraction of the infant from the birthing canal may lead to head trauma, which can cause brain damage. A medical professional may misuse equipment like forceps or vacuums, which can damage a baby’s head and brain. If the delivery is rushed or improperly executed, a head or brain injury may also occur. The doctor may exert too much force or unnecessary jerking, twisting, or pulling, which can injure the baby’s head or brain. In any case, much of the head trauma to the child during the birthing process can be the result of carelessness on the part of the one delivering the child.

Birth Asphyxia
Some brain injuries are not caused by head trauma but instead by a lack of adequate oxygen flowing to the infant’s brain during the birthing process. When a child does not receive enough oxygen, brain cells die that cannot be restored. This can happen in a variety of ways, but most commonly occurs when the umbilical cord is pinched which restricts blood flow to the child’s brain. This may also be because of a mistake on behalf of the medical professional delivering the baby. Birth asphyxia may result in lifelong disabilities such as cognitive disorders, learning disabilities, and speech and language delays.
