Biting Back Against Dog Bites

The Center for Disease Control recently announced that dog bites are once again on the rise. The CDC reports that in the first six months of 2010, 16 fatal dog attacks occurred. In addition, statistics show that over 800,000 Americans need medical attention every year from dog bite injuries. Approximately 50 percent of these victims are below the age of 9.

The “Michigan Dog Bite Statute” holds owners of dogs who have bitten someone “strictly liable.” The Michigan Dog Bite Statute, MCL 287.351, states that if a dog bites a person on public property or lawfully on private property, then the owner of the dog is liable for any damages caused by the attack, unless the attack was provoked.
